Reading Comprehension
Comprehension is the ultimate goal of the reading process. The following factors influence a child’s ability to understand what they are reading:
- Accurate and fluent (smooth with expression) reading of words
- Knowledge of vocabulary
- Strong background knowledge (knowledge of the subject matter)
- Self-monitoring of understanding while reading (an understanding when something doesn’t make sense)
- Applying strategies when confusion arises
