Reading Comprehension

Comprehension is the ultimate goal of the reading process. The following factors influence a child’s ability to understand what they are reading:

  1. Accurate and fluent (smooth with expression) reading of words
  2. Knowledge of vocabulary
  3. Strong background knowledge (knowledge of the subject matter)
  4. Self-monitoring of understanding while reading (an understanding when something doesn’t make sense)
  5. Applying strategies when confusion arises

Stephen uses multiple resources to help students work on comprehension. He teaches strategies in a multisensory way to ensure students are monitoring their understanding while reading. Sessions are 55 minutes.
