Early Prevention

early interventionUnlike speaking, learning to spell, write, and read is not a natural process. These skills must be taught.  Many sub-skills of reading can be taught prior to a child entering formal schooling. Early prevention services are intended for pre-K and Kindergarten students. Sessions are 30-45 minutes. Stephen uses several resources including Preflight (a precursor to Take Flight) in order to help students develop the following skills:

1. The Alphabetic Principle (Alphabet/letter awareness)

  • The number of letters in the alphabet
  • The sequence of letters
  • Letter/sound correspondence (the sound(s) each letter/group of letters makes)

2. Phonological Awareness

  • Hearing beginning & ending sounds
  • Blending sounds together
  • Unblending sounds in words
  • Rhyming

3. Listening Comprehension

  • Building vocabulary
  • Determining the parts of a story
