Early Prevention
Unlike speaking, learning to spell, write, and read is not a natural process. These skills must be taught. Many sub-skills of reading can be taught prior to a child entering formal schooling. Early prevention services are intended for pre-K and Kindergarten students. Sessions are 30-45 minutes. Stephen uses several resources including Preflight (a precursor to Take Flight) in order to help students develop the following skills:
1. The Alphabetic Principle (Alphabet/letter awareness)
- The number of letters in the alphabet
- The sequence of letters
- Letter/sound correspondence (the sound(s) each letter/group of letters makes)
2. Phonological Awareness
- Hearing beginning & ending sounds
- Blending sounds together
- Unblending sounds in words
- Rhyming
3. Listening Comprehension
- Building vocabulary
- Determining the parts of a story
